Spanish II Students Receive Awards

April 21, 2009 - The Spanish II students proved this semester that they can use the language to communicate both verbally and orally. Fourteen students from the Pre-AP Spanish honors class took the Spanish writing test in mid March. Despite the early test date and our block schedule students performed well with a superior, five excellent, and eight notables. Olivia Payton won a $25 award for superior performance. Exactly one month later they spent their Saturday at the West Metro Foreign Language Forum where several schools including the Walker School competed in a spoken language contest. Heard County students returned with seven superiors and three excellent placements. In a world where global communication is more important than ever these students deserve special recognition for rising to the challenge to learn and use the language and skills for success in a competitive market.

Braves Continue Domination

January 12, 2009 - The Heard County High School boys’ basketball team continued their dominance over the Christmas break, winning the Haralson Invitational Tournament and adding a couple of key region 5-AA victories to their already impressive resume. The Braves (12-1, 5-1) did finally falter and picked up the team’s lone defeat on the season when they fell to an inspired Callaway squad this past weekend. The Braves entered the game this past Friday night against rival Callaway with an 11-0 record. However, the Cavaliers (7-3) refused to be intimidated, and led after the opening quarter by a score of 12-10. The teams swapped baskets in the second quarter, and Callaway went into halftime with a 28-26 lead. The Braves came out strong after the break and took a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter. The Braves, who had struggled from the free throw line all night, continued to squander opportunities, and the Cavaliers won by a final score of 55-53. Emory finished with a game high eighteen points, while senior Chris Franklin added ten points.

After the loss to Callaway, the team bounced back, and crushed new region 5-AA foe Spencer High School by a score of 69-50 on Saturday night.

Braves Win Tournament

December 30, 2008: The Heard County High School boys’ basketball team continued their remarkable season Tuesday night with a 69-57 victory over host Haralson County in the final of the Haralson County Invitational. The win capped off an impressive three victories in four days by the Braves (9-0), who won the annual tournament for the first time since 2001. The Braves took a big lead early against the Rebels (5-9), ending the first quarter with an 18-9 lead. However, the Rebels fought back and trailed by only two heading into the fourth quarter. The Braves pulled away in the end, outscoring the Rebels 24-14 in the final period. The Braves were led by tournament MVP Santez Emory, who finished with a game high 18 points in the game. Sophomore Martez Winston was named to the All-Tournament Team after contributing 11 points and several key assists.

During the tournament, the Braves were forced to play a tough AAAA Villa Rica team and an unknown out-of-state opponent in Heflin High School (Alabama). The Braves defeated Villa Rica in the opening game of the tournament by a score of 59-47. The Braves then returned Monday evening and defeated Heflin by a score of 82-71. Head coach Paul Brewer sees the tournament victory as a part of the big picture. “For us and our youth to have won seven road games already is a big deal,” claimed Brewer. “We need to really get back to practice and get ready for the grind now.”

Heard High Earns Platinum Rating

December 5, 2008: Congratulations to Heard County Comprehensive High School for earning Platinum Award Recognition (the highest award level) for outstanding improvement and achievement during the 2007-2008 school year. Heard County High School’s award was in the "Greatest Gain" category. Heard County High School is one of 279 schools in Georgia being recognized under Georgia's Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS), which awards schools based on their performance on state curriculum exams and Adequate Yearly Progress Status. Heard County High School was one of only nine high schools in the state of Georgia to receive this award.

" These awards are just one way to say 'thank you' and 'great job' to the principals, teachers, parents and students at these schools," said State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox. "This type of achievement and improvement doesn't happen unless everyone is focused on the goal of providing a quality education to every student."

The awards are being announced as part of the release of the 2007-2008 K-12 Public Schools Report Card. The recognized schools will receive a letter and a banner announcing the award. "Governor Perdue and I are pleased to recognize schools that the data shows are getting great results," said Jennifer Rippner Buck, Executive Director of the Governor's Office of Student Achievement. "Congratulations to the staff and students at these 279 schools that are leading the state in student achievement and student improvement."

The schools are awarded on four levels and two categories. The levels include Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. The two categories are Greatest Gains, schools that showed the greatest improvement in scores on the Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT), and Highest Performance, schools that demonstrated the highest achievement on the GHSGT.

EOCTs (End-Of-Course Tests) and
GHSGTs (GA High School Graduation Tests)

Dear Parents/Students:

The EOCTs (End-Of-Course Tests) will be given again this year in 9th Grade Literature, American Literature, Biology, Physical Science, US History, Economics, Algebra I, Geometry, and Math I. The first round of EOCTs will be at the beginning of December. Heard County High School has teamed up with the Department of Education and can now offer a practice site for working on these EOCTs. The great thing about this site is that you can retake these tests as often as you like so that you can learn from your initial mistakes.

In addition to the EOCTs, Heard High will also be administering the GHSGTs (GA High School Graduation Tests) in the spring for all Juniors. There are practice tests for these graduation tests on the site as well. The graduation tests cover the following subjects: English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

Please click here for full letter with instructions for how to log on the site.

Sincerely,
Rodney Kay
Assistant Principal Curriculum/Instruction
