Christmas Recipes
By: Candi Loghry
Christmas
is a wonderful time of year. It is a time for hope, a time for
peace, and a time for joy. There are always a lot of things to
look forward to during this season. Things such as getting out
of school for the holidays, putting up the Christmas tree, getting
up early to open all of your gifts, and who can forget Christmas
dinner! For most families there is always a huge Christmas feast,
but after a while it seems kind of hard to serve something new.
Everyone has their favorite foods that they look forward to, but
no one wants to serve the exact same thing year after year. So,
I decided to share three of my own favorite dessert recipes with
you. These are all simple recipes that not only taste good, but
you can have a blast with your friends and family making them.
Recipe # 1: Oreo Pie
Ingredients:
• 1 package Oreo cookies crushed
• 3/4 stick (3 ounces) butter, melted
• 1 (8oz) package cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup confectioners sugar
• 1 container of cool whip
• 1 large package instant chocolate pudding prepared according to directions
Preparation:
Mix together crushed oreos and butter; press into 9 x 13 pan. Blend cream
cheese and powdered sugar together, then add container of Cool Whip and
spread on top of crust. Layer prepared pudding over cream cheese layer.
Garnish top with left over cookie crumbs. Refrigerate.
Recipe # 2: Classic Cheesecake
Ingredients:
• 1-1/2 cups HONEY MAID Graham Cracker Crumbs
• 3 Tbsp. sugar
• 1/3 cup butter or margarine, melted
• 4 pkg. (8 oz. each) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tsp. vanilla
• 4 eggs
Preparation:
Mix crumbs, 3 Tbsp. sugar and butter; press firmly onto bottom of 9-inch
springform pan. Beat cream cheese, 1 cup sugar and vanilla with electronic
mixer on medium speed until well blended. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing
on low speed after each addition just until blended. Pour over crust. Bake
at 325°F for 55 minutes, or until center is almost set if using a silver
springform pan. Loosen cake from side of pan; cool before removing side
of pan. Refrigerate for 4 hours, or over night.
Recipe # 3: Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 cups butter, softened
• 2 cups white sugar
• 4 eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 5 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• 1 teaspoon salt
Preparation:
1. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in
eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and
chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured
surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place
cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
3. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.
Christmas
Volunteer Options
By: Jennifer Harris
Feel
like lending a helping hand this Christmas? Well, what a better
time to volunteer your help to those in need. Here are a few options
to consider if you would like to volunteer. One exciting and really
enjoyable volunteer option is to participate in a program called
Operation Christmas Child. You probably have heard of this program
sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse. Operation Christmas Child
has been around for 35 years and distributes millions of gift-filled
boxes and gospel pamphlets to children in over 95 underdeveloped
countries. If you desire to participate with this program you can
help out in many different ways. You can either donate a gift-filled
shoe box or you can volunteer at one of the box packing plants.
Both of these options are enjoyable and really help you to see
how thankful you should be for the prosperity that we have in the
United States. This is a wonderful volunteer option for you and
your friends to get involved with.
Another easy volunteer option is to work at a local
food kitchen. Food, or sometimes know as soup, kitchens provide
free food for the homeless or less fortunate through holiday seasons
and sometimes on a regular basis depending on each establishment.
You can either donate canned food or other food items, or you can
volunteer your time. What a wonderful way to get involved in your
community and provide a necessity to those who would not be fed
otherwise.
If you enjoy helping children, an additional volunteer option is to donate
an unwrapped toy to Toy for Tots. This organization is sponsored by the United
States Marines and provides toys for young children in need at Christmas time.
You can usually locate many drop-off locations. Just buy a nice toy and donate
it to a child in need.
There are also many other volunteer options open
to students that are local and national programs. Keep your options
open and truly consider helping others out this Christmas. You
definitely have so much to gain when you sacrifice your time or
money for others.
Fun
Christmas Activities
By: Jennifer Harris
One thing that most everyone loves about Christmas
is all of the fun activities that you can do during this joyful
time of year. Here are a few options if you are feeling jolly and
in the Christmas spirit!
Fantasy in Lights at Callaway Gardens is a must see Christmas light display
that includes over 8 million lights in over 12 different scenes. Just hop on
the “Jolly Trolley,” a Fantasy in Lights tour trolley, and take
a guided tour of the animated and music accompanied Christmas scenes while
sipping some hot chocolate and listening to Christmas carols. Scenes include
March of the Toy Soldiers, Snowflake Valley, and the Amazing Twin Trees. General
admission is $15 plus tax for adults and $7.50 plus tax for children ages 6-12.
Children under five are admitted free. After your trip through the “fantasy” you
can visit the Christmas Village where you can buy Christmas goodies and maybe
even see Old Saint Nick.
Another very fun Christmas activity is to see a Christmas show or play. “The
Nutcracker” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” are popular
Christmas plays. These shows can be seen sometimes at local theatres. This
year however both of these plays can be seen at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. “The
Nutcracker” will be showing at the Fox December 2-30. Admission to this
show ranges from $17 - $82 depending on the seats you choose. Local church
Christmas plays are also a wonderful way to see a free show that is centered
on the true meaning of Christmas. It is always a good idea to keep your eyes
open for other Christmas activities provided by churches such as live nativities,
and Christmas musicals. These are always interesting and enjoyable experiences.
Although us Georgians don’t get snow very often, we can still experience
a taste of cold weather and ice activity by going ice skating. If you’ve
never been ice skating you have been missing out. There are many inexpensive
ice skating locations within driving distance from Heard County. Most ice skating
rinks charge a one time entry fee and skate renting fee and then you can skate
until you drop. One really neat ice skating location is Centennial Park in
Atlanta. This skating rink is Atlanta’s only outside rink so it can get
a little chilly, but the experience is well worth it.
All of these activities are so much fun. Have fun and give one of them a try.
You might be surprised at how much fun you will have. Don’t forget to
be safe this Christmas and truly savor all of the blessings that we are so
fortunate to have this time of year.

Braves Season Ends
Football - The
Heard County Braves had their season cut short in the second
round of the state playoffs thanks to a 38-8 defeat at the
hands of Lovett High School. Despite their exit from the playoffs,
Heard County had a tremendous season marked by numerous accomplishments.
These accomplishments include winning a second region championship
(5-AA), winning a school-record eleven games, maintaining a
school-record eleven game win streak, continuing a school-record
17 game region win streak (active), and winning a school-record
18 consecutive regular season games (active).
The
Braves (11-1) entered the game on an eleven game win streak that
seemed doomed from the start. Heard County started the game with
the ball, but saw their opening drive stall due to a holding
penalty. Lovett scored quickly on their first possession to take
a 7-0 lead. Heard County saw their next drive killed due to another
costly penalty. The Lions (10-2) then moved the ball quickly
downfield, but were forced to settle for a field goal to take
a 10-0 lead into the intermission. After halftime, it was all
Lovett, as the Lions expanded their lead before Heard County
finally scored in the closing minutes of the game.

Braves and Lady
Braves Tip-off
Basketball Season
Basketball - The
2006-2007 basketball season began Tuesday night at home with
a preseason scrimmage against AAA Haralson County High School.
The Lady Braves played the opener against the Lady Rebels,
and showed vast improvements against the traditionally strong
Haralson County team. The Lady Braves played aggressive defense
to create turnovers and scoring opportunities, which kept the
game close throughout. At the end, the Lady Rebels managed
to squeak by with a narrow victory.
The night was
capped off by an exciting game between the Braves and the Rebels.
The game was tied at halftime at 26-26. The second half of the
game was dominated by physical play, as the lead changed back
and forth in the final two periods. In the end, the Rebels wore
down the depleted Braves for the victory. The Braves had to play
without several key players due to the continuation of football
season. Despite coming up short, second year head coach Paul
Brewer was pleased with the effort. “The team played hard,
and I was really pleased with the progress made by Chris Franklin.
He has really bought into our weight room program.”
The Braves
and Lady Braves will open their regular season at home on December
1 against Bowdon. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00.
Chris Franklin wins the opening tip vs Haralson
County.

Braves Outlast
Bulldogs
Football - The
Heard County High School football team survived a brutal assault
from visiting Morgan County High School to move into the second
round of the AA state playoffs. The Braves won the game in
the third overtime period, when Morgan County failed to convert
on a two-point conversion, giving the Braves a 50-48 victory.
The victory allows the Braves (11-0) to continue their undefeated
season, while setting the school record for wins.
The
Braves knew they were in for a fight from the start, when the
Bulldogs (6-5) scored a touchdown on their opening drive. The
Braves followed up with a scoring drive of their own, capped
off by a Dontavius Jackson touchdown with 2:29 remaining in the
first quarter. After snuffing out a Morgan County drive, the
Braves drove the ball to the Morgan County five yard line where
quarterback Santez Emory scored on a keeper giving the Braves
a 13-10 lead with 4:11 remaining in the opening half. Morgan
County scored on a short drive, but were quickly answered when
the Braves scored on a short pass from Emory to fullback T.J.
Cheeks to give the Braves a 20-17 lead heading into halftime.
Both
teams were forced to punt on their opening drives of the first
half, but Heard County managed to breakthrough in the third period
on a 20 yard run by Jackson to take a 27-17 lead. The Bulldogs
answered quickly thanks to a long kickoff return that gave Morgan
County the ball inside the Braves’ 20 yard line. Three
plays later, the Bulldogs closed the gap to 27-24. After capitalizing
on Heard County’s only turnover of the game, the Bulldogs
kicked a field goal with 6.6 seconds left. During the first two
overtimes, both teams scored. Heard County got the ball first
in the third overtime and quickly scored on another Jackson run.
Heard County was successful on the two-point conversion, setting
up the final Morgan County possession.
Heard
County will host Lovett High School (9-2) on Friday night at
7:30.

10-0!!!
Football - The
Heard County High School football team ended their regular
season with a perfect record when they defeated Lamar County
by a score of 35-21 on Friday night. The win gives the Braves
(10-0, 8-0) a perfect regular season for the first time in
school history. The victory also marks the second consecutive
season that the Braves have managed to finish with a perfect
region record. Heard County has won 17 consecutive region contests
and 18 regular season games overall.
The
game pitted a desperate Lamar County team against a Heard County
team with nothing but pride on the line. The Braves clinched
the region championship and a #1 seed in the state playoffs last
week. The Trojans (6-4, 4-4) came out fighting, knowing that
they could clinch a playoff spot with a win. Heard started the
game off with stellar defense that shut down the first two Lamar
drives. The offense moved the ball against a tenacious and hard-hitting
Lamar County defense. The Braves took 7-0 lead, but thanks to
turnovers and a tremendous amount of penalties, the game went
to halftime with a 14-14 score.
The
second half would be hard fought, as Lamar seemed to answer every
time the Braves scored. The Braves defense stepped up with some
big turnovers to snuff out Trojan drives before they could take
the lead. Finally, the Braves were able to gain a 27-21 lead
in the fourth, and then put the game away with only a couple
of minutes remaining on a long run by Dontavius Jackson.
The
Braves begin their playoff run next week when they host the #4
seed from region 8-AA Morgan County. The game will be played
Friday night at 7:30.

Pike County by a score of 48-20 on Friday night. The victory
clinched the region 5-AA title for the Braves (9-0, 7-0), who
remain unbeaten on the season. The Braves scored early and
often thanks to runs by junior Dontavius Jackson, who finished
the night with 5 touchdowns including a career-long 96 yard
touchdown run.
The
game also served as homecoming for the Braves. Fans from past
classes and several generations packed into Staples Stadium to
support their alma mater. At halftime, senior Kayla Janney was
crowned homecoming queen for the 2006-2007 school year. Also,
senior Lacey Hannah and Kelsey Nutt were honored respectively
as first and second runners-up.

Braves Weather
Storm and Hurricanes to Remain Undefeated
Football - The
Heard County High School football team pounded Rutland High
School by a score of 49-25 on Friday night. The Braves (8-0,
6-0) were forced to overcome sloppy field conditions, numerous
penalties, and an inspired Hurricane team to remain unbeaten
on the season. The victory gives the Braves a chance to clinch
the region 5-AA championship with a victory over Pike County
on Homecoming night this Friday.
The
Braves were able to score early and often, but the wet conditions
led to several missed tackles which allowed the Hurricanes (3-5,
3-3) to keep the game close. Heard County led at halftime by
a score of 26-13 thanks to scoring runs by Dontavius Jackson
and Lawrence Vaughn, and a touchdown pass from Santez Emory to
Jackson. The Braves pulled away in the second half on rushes
by Jackson and fullback T.J. Cheeks. The Braves return to action
this Friday at home against Pike County. Kickoff is scheduled
for 7:30.

Lady Braves Lose
Heartbreaker to End Season
Softball - October
21, 2006:The
Heard County High School fast-pitch softball team played its
way to the North Sectional finals in Dalton, Georgia before
faltering in a twelve-inning thriller to #3 ranked North Oconee.
At the game, pitcher Laura Hutchins was forced to pitch her
third game of the day and fifth game in less than 24 hours.
However, she didn’t let up, keeping the game close. Managing
to score runs to keep the Braves alive, the team was only able
to put one run across in the twelfth inning giving North Oconee
the 6-5 victory.
The
North Sectional began Friday night for the Lady Braves with a
victory over Union County. This sent Heard County to the winner’s
bracket to face #2 ranked Dade County, who defeated the Lady
Braves by a score of 10-0 on the same night. The Heard County
team was forced to play early Saturday morning, where they defeated
Creekview High School by a score of 7-0. The Lady Braves continued
to role when they shutout #5 ranked Rockmart High School by a
score of 2-0. This set up the Saturday evening duel with North
Oconee, with the winner advancing to the elite eight of the Georgia
state playoffs. The Lady Braves entered the tournament as the
three seed from region 5-AA, but managed to go farther in the
state tournament than any other region team. The Lady Braves
(21-12) finished the tournament with three wins.

Braves Rout Callaway
After Poor Start
Football - The
Heard County High School football team gave up two early touchdowns
to archrival Callaway, but bounced back to defeat Callaway
by a score of 49-33. The victory helps the Braves (7-0, 5-0)
maintain their region 5-AA lead. Callaway (3-4, 2-3) put up
an early fight capitalizing on missed tackles by the Braves
to take a 13-0 lead early in the first quarter. Callaway carried
a 19-7 lead into the second quarter, but the Braves began to
make their move scoring on a quarterback keeper by freshman
Santez Emory to pull the Braves within four at halftime.
Heard began the second half by scoring on their opening drive thanks to a 62
yard run by Emory. Callaway answered quickly with a long run up the middle
to take a 25-22 lead. However, Heard County’s dominance would be established
for the remainder of the game, as the Braves would score 27 unanswered points
on touchdown runs by senior fullback T.J Cheeks, freshman running back Jeremiah
Hill, and two scores by junior running back Dontavius Jackson.
The Braves continue their road to repeating as region champions next Friday
(October 27) at Rutland High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.

has dropped out of the rankings due the loss. Another
Braves opponent, Bremen High School, enters the rankings
this week at the #9 spot in single A. The Braves defeated

Braves Halt Manchester
22-0
Football - The
Heard County High School football team took a major step toward
repeating as region champions when they shutout the Manchester
Blue Devils by a score of 22-0 on Friday night. The victory
gives the Braves (6-0, 4-0) the outright lead in region 5-AA,
and their second victory against a ranked opponent in their
last three games.
The
Blue Devils (5-1, 3-1 / Ranked #6 in AA) failed to move the ball
on the opening drive of the game, and then botched the punt attempt
on a bad snap. The Braves took over on the 15 yard line, and
Dontavius Jackson rushed for a score on the Braves first play
from scrimmage. The Braves scored again on their very next possession,
when Jackson ran for a 20+ yard score with 6:26 remaining in
the first quarter. The two-point conversion run by Jackson gave
the Braves a 14-0 lead heading into the second quarter.
Though
Heard County was able to move the ball, neither team was able
to score in the second and third quarter. The Braves were able
to take advantage of great field position, and Jackson rushed
for the final score of the game with less than ten minutes remaining.
Jackson finished the game with 155 yards on 24 carries, three
touchdowns, and two 2 point conversions. However, the real hero
of the game may have been the Heard County defense, which held
the potent Manchester attack (averaging 32 points a game) to
only 89 rushing yards and 127 total yards.
The
Braves return to action on Friday night (October 20) at home
against rival and region 5-AA foe Callaway. The kickoff is set
for 7:30.

Eagles
Football - The
Heard County High School football team used a methodical running
game to grind down the Crawford County Eagles on the road Friday
night by a score of 34-12. The game started poorly for the
Braves as an interception led to a game leading touchdown drive
for the Eagles (2-4, 1-3), who led going into the second quarter
by a score of 6-0. The Braves (5-0, 3-0) scored on a running
play by freshman quarterback Santez Emory to tie the game 6-6
early in the second quarter. The Braves take the lead for good
with a touchdown run by junior running back Dontavius Jackson
with three minutes left in the first half.
After halftime, the Braves came out and used their size to wear down Crawford,
as they extended their lead to 27-12 thanks to touchdown runs by Jackson and
fullback Lawrence Vaughn. The Braves eat up the clock in the fourth quarter
and cap the drive off with Jackson’s third rushing touchdown of the night.
The Braves continue their season on Friday night (October 13) at home against
region 5-AA leading Manchester High School (5-0, 3-0). Kickoff will be at 7:30.

CRUNCH!!!
Braves Pound #1 Bowdon
The
Heard County Braves ran over the #1 ranked Bowdon Red Devils
by a score of 37-27 on Friday night. The game represented the
rekindling of an old rivalry, and the Braves put their stamp
on the revived competition by showing Bowdon the difference
between AA and A football. The Red Devils (4-1) were favored
by several area publications and had garnered a #1 ranking
in recent coach’s polls due to their success.
The Red Devils took an early 14-3 lead thanks to two costly Heard County turnovers.
However, the Braves (4-0, 2-0) continued to pound the Red Devils upfront with
their massive offensive line, and running back Dontavius Jackson punished Bowdon
with one impressive run after another. The Braves quickly scored on consecutive
possessions and took a 17-14 lead. The Braves almost added to their lead before
the intermission when Jackson broke free for a 64 yard run, which ended on
the one yard line with no time remaining.
The intermission did little to slow down the Heard County running attack, and
the Braves scored on their first possession to increase their lead to 24-14.
The Braves added another score to take a 30-14 lead, thanks again to another
long run. Though the game was out of reach, the teams swapped scores late to
make the final 37-27.
Jackson rushed 25 times for 338 yards and 4 touchdowns, while freshman quarterback
Santez Emory had 9 carries for 162 yards and 1 score. On the night the Braves
totaled 596 rushing yards and 615 total yards of offense. Bowdon’s offense
was led by quarterback Jake Rollins who passed for 240 yards during the game.
The Braves return to region 5-AA action on Friday night (October 6) at Crawford
County. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.

Braves Surprise
Macon County
Football -
The
Heard County Braves remained undefeated in region play with
a 20-8 victory over Macon County. Macon County (1-3, 1-1)
were predicted by many to reign over region 5-AA during the
2006 season. For the Braves (3-0, 2-0), the game represented
a measuring stick to what was supposed to be a rebuilding
year. A stellar crowd was on hand to see the Braves play
their home opener and they were not disappointed.
The
Bulldogs began the game with a failed opening drive that led
to a punt, which pinned the Braves deep into their own territory.
When the Braves offense sputtered, the Bulldogs blocked the punt
through the back of the end zone for a safety. This gave Macon
County a 2-0 lead. The Braves, however, seemed undaunted as they
came back to score on a touchdown by fullback Lawrence Vaughn,
giving Heard County a 6-2 lead going into the second quarter.
The Braves scored again in the second quarter on a run by freshman
quarterback Santez Emory, which gave the Braves a 13-2 lead heading
into the intermission.
The
team came out in the second half and continued to stifle the
Bulldog offense, while simultaneously eating up the clock on
offense. The third quarter came to a close with the score unchanged,
but that changed quickly, as the Braves scored on the first play
of the fourth quarter to increase their lead to 20-2. The touchdown
was the second of the game for Emory. The Bulldogs would finally
get into the end zone with 3.6 seconds remaining. The competition
for the Braves doesn’t get any easier, as the team will
host #1 ranked Bowdon on Friday (September 29) night at 7:30.

Fullback
Lawrence Vaughn scores
a touchdown against Macon Co. in the first half.

Braves Pound Marion
County
The
Heard County Braves opened region play with a 40-14 beating
of Marion County High School. The game, played at Marion
County in Buena Vista, was over quickly, as the Braves (2-0,
1-0) scored at will. The scoring for the Braves began on
the first series when senior fullback T.J. Cheeks rushed
for a touchdown. After the Heard County defense forced the
Eagles (2-1, 0-1) to punt after three plays, junior running
back Dontavius Jackson took off for an 85 yard touchdown
run. The Eagles turned the ball over on their next series,
and Jackson scored on another long run. Freshman quarterback
Santez Emory scored the final touchdown of the opening half,
giving the Braves a 28-0 lead at the break. In the third
quarter, the offense continued to roll as Emory hit senior
tide end Victor Swint for a touchdown, giving the Braves
a 34-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. With mostly backups
and JV players in the game, the Eagle offense was able to
score; however, the game was never in doubt. The Braves return
to action this Friday as they host region foe Macon County
at 7:30. The game is the home opener for the Braves.

Braves Shock Bremen
in OT
The
Heard County High School football team opened up the regular
season with a clutch 18-17 overtime victory against long-time
rival Bremen. The Braves were down 7-10 with seconds left
when sophomore kicker Jake Yates drilled a 35 yard field
goal to send the game into overtime. Bremen scored quickly
on their first possession in the overtime period. The Braves
(1-0, 0-0) responded with a scoring drive that ended when
fullback Lawrence Vaughn pounds it up the middle for a two
yard score. Head coach Tim Barron opted to go for the two
point conversion, and junior running back Dontavius Jackson
broke a tackle for the winning score. The Braves return to
action on September 15 at Marion High School (formerly Tri
County High School) in the region 5-AA opener for both teams.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Heard County Softball Dominates
Tournament
The
Heard County High School Lady Braves traveled to Troup County
on Friday and Saturday and returned winners of four out of five
at the Callaway Invitational Tournament. Overall, the softball
team outscored their opponents 45-19 during the five games. The
team opened the tournament Friday evening with a hard fought
6-5 victory over AAA Troup County High School. They followed
that victory with a tough 0-3 loss to Oglethorpe High School
later Friday night. However, it was Saturday that saw the Lady
Braves (7-4) break loose, beginning with a 12-2 shelling of region
5-AA foe Manchester. Afterwards, the Lady Braves defeated their
second AAA opponent in two days with an 8-5 victory over Mary
Persons. Region rival Lamar County became Heard County’s
final victim, as the Lady Braves crushed the Lady Trojans by
a final score of 19-4. The Lady Braves return to action on Tuesday
night (August 29) at Haralson County.

Braves Show Improvement
During Scrimmage
On
Friday night (August 25), the Heard County High School football
team hosted a preseason scrimmage game against former rival Brookstone
High School. Though no score was kept during the game, the Braves
did score a touchdown, and sustained a couple of lengthy drives.
The defense also held up surprisingly well, despite only returning
3 starters from last season’s region 4-AA championship
squad. Brian Mills was particularly effective with numerous tackles
on the night. The Braves open the season next Friday night (September
1) at Bremen High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.
