Heard County Boys/Girls
Split Hoops Opener
By
Zach Burson
Basketball - The Heard County High School basketball
season opened with mixed results on Tuesday (November 15)
night against Bowdon High School. The Braves (1-0) began
the season with an impressive 58-51 victory over the Red
Devils (0-1). The team started out hot from beyond the three
point arch, as seniors Gurdeep Grewal and Zerick Green hit
from deep. However, early foul trouble let Bowdon back in
the game, and the two teams went to the locker rooms with
the score tied up at 23-23. The Braves responded in the second
half with instruction from new head coach Paul Brewer. Bowdon
broke down under the defensive pressure applied by the Braves
and the Braves entered the final period with a comfortable
lead.
The
Lady Braves dropped the evening opener 47-25 to the #9 ranked
Lady Red Devils. Both teams played tough, but the Lady Braves
inability to score left them shutout 10-0 at the end of the opening
period. The Lady Braves finally got on the board in the second
period and trailed 19-7 at the half. The Lady Braves offense
really opened up in the third as seniors Daphne Holtzclaw and
DeeDee Kendrix both got hot from outside. After the game, first
year head coach Heath Horn commented on the season opener, “I
am pleased with the overall hustle and we gave a good effort.
I have only been coaching the girls for a week and the offense
will get better.”
Both
teams will be back in action at Bowdon High School on November
29 at 6:00.

Braves Season Ends Against
Charlton County
Football -
The Heard County Braves ran into the defending AA state champions
on Friday night and paid the
price. Charlton County dominated the Braves (10-2) winning
by a score of 52-21. The Braves turned the ball over on the
first possession after driving deep into Indian territory.
Charlton County (11-1) used their potent offensive attack
to score quickly and take an 8-0 lead. The Braves were forced
to play catch up all night. The Braves did rack up over 400
yards of offense, but failed to put the ball in the endzone
or sustain drives as they had in previous games. Carlos Brown
ran for 100 yards and threw for 137 and two touchdowns. Dontavius
Jackson added 142 rushing yards.
Despite the loss, the Braves can hold their heads high. Though this was only
Heard County’s second year in AA, they managed to win the Region 4-AA
championship, a first round game, and ten football games. The future is bright
for the Braves who return a 1400 yard rusher and the entire offensive line
for the 2006 season. Great job coaches and players, your hard work has made
everyone in the Braves’ Nation proud!

Braves Slip Past
Dodge County
Football - The
Heard County High School football team earned a spot in the
2nd Round of the state playoffs with their 33-27 victory over
Dodge County on Friday (November 4) night. The Braves (10-1)
struggled early on offense, but were able to score first when
Terrence Thomaston picked up a Dodge County fumble and ran
43 yards for a touchdown. The Braves had turnover problems
of their own as they fumbled twice and threw an interception
in the first half. The Dodge County Indians proved they were
ready to play and scored to tie the game with 3:01 left in
the opening quarter. The Braves fumbled on their next series,
and the Indians took advantage with a quick score to give them
a 14-7 lead. The Braves made it 14-13 when Carlos Brown ran
for a 1 yard touchdown that capped off a solid 11 play drive.
The Indians scored on their next drive to end the half leading
20-13.
The game turned around when Dodge County fumbled the opening kickoff of the
second half. Two plays later Brown scampered 27 yards for the score. After
the Braves defense held, the Braves began a drive that covered 78 yards in
eight plays, and ended with Dontavius Jackson rushing 4 yards to give the Braves
a 25-20 lead. The Indians answered again, scoring quickly to take a 27-25 led
with only 8:10 left in the game. However, the Braves were able to drive the
length of the field when it mattered most. This 15 play drive included two
key fourth down conversions, and culminated with Thomaston scoring on a 10
yard reverse play with only 45 seconds left in the game. The Braves will host
next week’s game against Charlton County High School who were the 2004
AA State Champions. The game will kickoff at 7:30.
