Spring Football
Scrimmage Exposes Bright Future

The
Heard County Braves football team finished their two weeks of
spring practice with an intra-squad scrimmage on Thursday (May
15). The team was broken into two teams: the Maroon team and
the White team. The two teams squared off for four quarters,
which each lasted 7 minutes. The junior varsity players played
a 20 minute running clock scrimmage at halftime. The Maroon team
came out on top 16-8 thanks to a brilliant 20 yard scamper by
freshman running back Morris Williams. Highly touted junior sensation
Carlos Brown played quarterback for both teams. After the game,
Coach Barron spoke to the team and acknowledged his excitement
over having so many (almost 60) players out for the team.

Heard
County High School football and baseball standout Jim Porter
has ended speculation regarding his athletic future on Thursday,
May 5, 2005 when he signed to play baseball at Gordon College
in Barnesville, Georgia. Porter, a highly sought after high school
punter, decided baseball was his best option. Assistant baseball
coach Chad Woods believed in Porters work ethic and pointed to
Porter as “a true example of hard work paying off.” The
Fighting Scots of Gordon College compete in the Commonwealth
Coast Conference at the NCAA Division III level. Congratulations
Jim!

Marshez Truitt Signs
To Play Basketball at
Clayton State University
Basketball - Heard
County High School basketball sensation Marshez Truitt ended
speculation about his college plans on Monday, April 25, 2005
by signing to play basketball at Clayton State University. Clayton
State University in Morrow, Georgia has a student population
of close to 6,000 and competes in the Peach Belt Conference.
Several big name recruits from across the nation have already
signed with Clayton State including 6-foot-7 junior forward John
Beugnot and 6-foot-11 sophomore center Cedrick Kalombo both junior
college transfers. Clayton State adds Truitt (6’6”,
195) and these transfers to an already loaded talent base that
includes sophomore Aristide Sawadogo (7’1”, 250)
from Burkina Faso and freshman Cedric Cornelus (6’10”,
220) from Martinique. Coach Gordon Gibbons, head coach at Clayton
State believes that Truitt will compliment the already strong
roster of players. “We are all very excited (players and
staff) that Marshez will be with us next year,” proclaimed
Gibbons.
Truitt
had several offers to consider from basketball programs across
the South. After receiving consideration from schools as far
away as Penn State and Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska,
Truitt narrowed his options down to Middle Tennessee State University
and Clayton State University. After visiting both schools Truitt
felt strongly that he wanted to be a Clayton State Laker. “The
enthusiasm of the student body toward the team, as well as meeting
the other players and the coaching staff made me want to attend
Clayton,” claimed Truitt. Truitt visited the Clayton State
campus twice, once on an official visit, and one unofficial visit
where he was able to view the Lakers against Kennesaw State University.
The Lakers won the game 75-70 in double overtime. Truitt commented, “The
gym was packed with thousands of fans and the environment was
unbelievable.”

Jordan Nutt to Play
College Basketball at LaGrange College
Basketball - For
one senior boy’s basketball player, the hopes of playing
at the college level seemed remote after a serious medical condition
sidelined him for much of the season. However, Jordan Nutt (6’5”,
170) fought through the pain and adversity and will be playing
at LaGrange College in the upcoming school year. Nutt had the
opportunity to play at several colleges who offer athletic scholarships,
but was determined from the start to play at LaGrange College.
LaGrange College is a private college of around 1,000 students
that competes at the NCAA Division III level. LaGrange College
coaches saw Nutt play several times during the season and were
delighted with his ability to score both in the paint and from
the perimeter. "We are very excited to have Jordan entering
our program with a solid basketball background from Coach Evans
and Heard County, noted LaGrange College head men’s basketball
Coach Warren Haynes. “Jordan is a tough young man who fought
through a difficult senior season and has only his best days
ahead of him at LaGrange College, added Haynes. “Jordan
is an example of the high class student, athlete and person that
excels in our basketball program and in our classrooms."
Prior
to the 2004-2005 school year, Nutt was considered one of the
areas top players and was coming off a summer of basketball that
saw him break the 30 point barrier more than once. However, right
before the 2004-2005 season began, Nutt had a lung collapse,
and it appeared that his college prospects would fade away. Jordan
battled back from surgery by working out over the Christmas holidays
with assistant basketball coach Paul Mixon. “We opened
up the weight room everyday over the [Christmas] break, and Jordan
suffered through the pain so he could play,” commented
Mixon. Nutt played the second half of the season and slowly recuperated
from his surgery and the 30 pounds of weight he lost while ill. “It
was a challenge, but I think I am a better player now because
of the effort that was required to return to the team,” Nutt
exclaimed. “I can’t wait to take my talent to the
next level.”

FOOTBALL – The
Heard County Braves (6-4, 5-4) had their playoff hopes dashed
on Friday (October 29) when the Jackson Red Devils (8-2, 8-1)
defeated the Braves by a score of 52-29. The game was never in
doubt as the Red Devils went into halftime with a 21-6 lead.
The score would not get any closer, as the powerful Jackson offense
racked up more than 500 yards of total offense. The lost ends
the Braves first AA season. The Braves exceeded all expectations
defeating AA rivals such as Callaway, Greenville, and Lamar County.
Coach Barron and his staff should be commended on an outstanding
season, and with most key athletes returning next year the 2005
Braves should be exciting to watch!

Trojans who outscored the Braves 14-0 in the half. However, their
final drive came up short, and the Braves held on for the important

21-20 when Carlos Brown scored a touchdown and kicked through
the extra point with seven seconds left in the game. The win
gives the Braves hope of a playoff spot in its inaugural AA season.
Greenville High School (5-3, 4-3) were considered one of the
stronger teams in region 4-AA. However, the Braves never panicked
after Greenville took a 12-0 lead in the first quarter. Brown
scored a second quarter touchdown, and the half ended with a
12-6 score. The Patriots scored after halftime making the score
20-6, but the Braves answered back with a touchdown by senior
Chad Philpot. Perhaps the play of the game occurred on the subsequent
extra-point attempt. A bad snap forced kicker Carlos Brown to
throw the ball, and he completed the two-point pass to senior
Jim Porter. Heard County returns to action on Friday (October
22) at home against the Lamar County Trojans. Game time is scheduled

Welcome to AA!
.V.
The
Heard County Braves pulled off one of the most impressive wins
in school history,
defeating rival Callaway High School 18-13 in Heard County’s
inaugural region 4-AA contest. The team was staked to a 12-0
halftime lead thanks to touchdowns from Chad Philpot and Jim
Porter, as well as a stellar defense that forced numerous Callaway
turnovers. Carlos Brown capped the Brave’s scoring with
a touchdown in the third quarter. Callaway made a valiant run
late in the game, but came up short when Jim Porter intercepted
a Callaway pass with less than a minute to play. The win marks
Heard County’s first ever win as a AA school, and is the
first win over Callaway in recent memory. The Braves hope to
continue their strong effort next Friday night (August 27) at
home against AAAA Whitewater High School. The game starts at
7:30 pm.
